A Mother From A Daughter’s Eyes

This mother’s day I’d like to write a little bit about my mother.  I have her to thank for being where I am today.  Seriously, I was born and raised in Madrid, Spain; so if it wasn’t for her sense of adventure twenty years ago, I wouldn’t be living in the United States.

Back in 1991, my mom gave me the option to come to the US to “learn English for a year.”  How could I say no? I had been to Disneyland the previous year and LOVED it!  Plus, the San Francisco Bay Area seemed like a neat place to visit for a year at the age of 12.

My mother’s sense of adventure was contagious.  I remember getting on that plane by myself and being excited about everything.  In my eyes, my mom was giving me the opportunity to learn English and live life like they do in the movies! (80s & early 90s mind you). I remember being giddy when I saw that real people wore Guess jeans and schools really used yellow buses!  Every day was a discovery of new things; and for that, I am grateful.

My mother’s capacity to dream and create one’s own reality was inspiring.  Everyday she would tell me (and still does): “picture what you want and work towards it; regardless of the obstacles. The universe will give it to you when you are ready to receive it.”  She knew The Secret, before it was written.  From an early age she encouraged me to learn, dream, and work hard; because everyone has the ability to create a life for themselves in spite of the circumstances.  We left our family, our houses, a maid and all our money for the opportunity to live a life with purpose and love-filled.  Still to this day, she is my biggest supporter.

Her overwhelming encouragement is what gets me going on bad days.  I think she was the first subscriber to my blog and almost always comments.  She is always encouraging and rarely critical.  One of the reasons I know my business will work, is because “my mother told me so.” Well, it’s mostly because she believes it will beyond doubt, and for that, I am humbled and grateful.  She drinks for a glass that is always full, that almost spills over if you don’t take a sip (like the foam when you pour a Coke).  It’s hard to not want that for myself.

My mother’s ability to forgive should be written about.  Her life has been filled with obstacles and difficult times; but if you ask her about them, she’ll only tell you what she learned from the experience because she has forgotten the details. She may get mad, but her heart forgives quickly and does not walk around with resentment.

Isa will tell you she is not perfect, nobody is, but she is perfect for me.  This mother’s day I am thankful that God chose her for me. She makes me want to be a better parent, inspire my children in their life, and become the example others need me to be.

Happy Mother’s Day Mom.

Love,

Laura

Beautiful story about your Mom. I feel the same about mine. She was a teacher and always told us that we could do anything we put our mind to, was always encouraging and supportive even if it was something she didn’t agree with.
    Thanks for sharing.

That was so sweet and your Mother is one of the Best out there. When she calls me (not too often) I love to hear what she has to say and I DO take all her advice. I know she has been in my shoes and this is why I listen to her so closely as if she was my own mom. I Love her so much and this is why My Mother’s named my daughter after her (didn’t know if you knew that). My Isa is so beautiful as your mother is as well. I wish her a Very Happy Mother’s Day!!!!!!! I Love you guys and Miss you both so much. Happy Mother’s Day Laura muah!!!!!!!!
