It’s Fun Friday!
A few things come to mind when I think of New Orleans souvenirs. I think of “I’ve survived Bourbon St t-shirts,” post cards, shot glasses, Mardi Gras beads, Cafe DuMonde Coffee or Beignet mix, pralines, alligator jaws, voodoo dolls, and all sorts of cheesy touristy stuff. The city is full of them, trust me. Today, I decided to share something I did with my cousin Miguel when he came to visit from Spain.
I wanted something better and different for him to take back to Spain that didn’t seem tacky. I also wanted him to remember the good times he had here. When I saw the Old Time Photo place two streets over from the cathedral; I thought, BINGO!
I had never done an old time photo before, so I thought it would be fun and a perfect all-American souvenir (they don’t do Old Time Photos anywhere else). I told the young man that I was taking a picture with my brother and to please not sit us in any “sexy” way, it’s just not right with family.
I let Miguel pick out what he wanted to wear from a sample book (since it was his souvenir) and from there, I chose a costume for me.
We had a blast trying stuff on and although it was a weird thing to only have a corset cover the front and hope that the strings wouldn’t bust… it was a blast. I also tried not to think about if the clothes had been washed…etc. I mean, this is two minutes from Bourbon St.
We took a few shots and we settled for this print.\
I told Miguel that he was made to hold a shot gun and look all western. I am glad we got to take this picture together, it captured the fun we had in his first trip to the US.

I don’t think you’re strict at all…in fact I think you sound just like me. : – ) Then again, maybe I’m strict.
You did a great job in this post breaking down how kids perceive food choices and explaining some of the influences that factor into it. I appreciate how well you did that!
My DD is 14 now, so I can tell you that all the hard work, explanations, resistance, education, “no, you can’t have thats,” does pay off. We’ve had our bumps in the road over the years, but now a teenager, my DD is still a healthy eater and I’m confident she’ll make healthy choices as an adult. Keep up the good work. It’s worth it; not only for our kids but for our planet, too.

Great to know that taking the time to explain the reasons for not buying certain things will pay off. I’ve had enough food issues myself as a teen and hope my kids know how to make good choices by then.
