1box brownie mix, plus the ingredients listed on the back of the box
1can pumpkin puree
1teaspoonpumpkin pie spice, or cinnamon
Instructions
Prep:
Preheat the oven to the temperature listed on the brownie mix box with the top rack in the oven positioned in the middle.
Grease a 9x13-inch baking pan with oil or cooking spray.
Make the batter:
In a mixing bowl, prepare the brownie batter according to the package directions.
In another bowl, add the canned pumpkin and pumpkin spice (or cinnamon) and mix to combine. Pour a little less than half of the brownie batter into the pumpkin bowl and stir to combine.
Swirl:
Pour the plain brownie batter into the prepared pan and spread it evenly. Spoon the pumpkin batter over the top, then use a butter knife or spatula to gently swirl the two batters together. Tip: Adding the pumpkin layer on the sides and ends will keep these brownies moist end-to-end.
Bake:
Bake according to the package directions for a 9x13-inch pan, checking for doneness with a toothpick inserted in the center a couple of minutes before. The brownies should be set in the middle.
Cool:
Remove from the oven and let the brownies cool completely before cutting into 16 squares.
Notes
Appearance: Since boxed brownie mixes already contain chocolate, the pumpkin swirl will be dark brown instead of orange, like this from-scratch version. You'll still get the pumpkin flavor.
Baking time: The added pumpkin puree increases the moisture in the batter, so the brownies may need additional baking time (+3 minutes) beyond what's listed on the box.
