Want to keep your food frozen as long as possible while maintaining its quality? Me too.

Below, you’ll find the top freezer bags we tested to freeze everything from soups to stews, meats, vegetables, and more!

collage of six different types of freezer bags

What to Look For

Selecting the right freezer bag for the task will not only keep your food frozen longer but also help it keep its quality, especially texture!

For short and long-term 6-9 month storage you’ll want to look out for:

  • Thick/flexible material: the bag should be made of material that’s durable enough to expand with the contents of the bag as it freezes without busting or breaking.
  • Double zipper: the seal should be easy to close and preferably double zipper. A lot of the “slider” seals- they come with the attached plastic piece that slides- tend to break and don’t offer as much air control easily.
  • Expandable bottom: a new feature that helps bags stand upright as you transfer food into their container; this benefits us by reducing spills and the urge to have a third hand.
  • Thicker material: what makes a bag suited for the “freezer” is the thickness of the bag. Thicker plastic bags and silicone bags are great for the job.

Best Overall Freezer Bag

When it comes to freezer bags, there are so many options to choose from, but the best ones are made of durable, BPA-free material that won’t tear or bust in the freezer, plus an airtight seal that basically glides shut.

It’s not a lot to ask for, but finding bags that check all those boxes for a reasonable price can be hard, good thing I did all the work for you.

Best All Around: Amazon Freezer Gallon Bags
Great quality, cost-effective, expandable base to hold food up when filling, double zipper closure and they come in bulk! These performed just as well as the brand-name Zicklock but and much cheaper per unit!

Best Freezer Marinade Bag

Using separate bags for marinating meats is a great way to eliminate food contamination. The best freezer bag options will have a thick lining, have a gallon capacity, and be easy to clean!

2-Gallon Marinade Freezer Bag
The larger 2-gallon size allows you to marinate several pounds of protein without the contents leaking in the freezer. The silicone material prevented freezer burns -even after 3 months- and is reusable!

Best Freezer Safe Bags for Soup and Chili

When looking for freezer bags to freeze soups and liquids, you’ll want to select a quart-size option. That’s usually big enough for 2 generous servings.

Ziploc Half Gallon Freezer Bags
These Ziploc bags are made of durable BPA-free plastic and have an expandable bottom, so the bag will stay upright as it's being filled.

Best Reusable Freezer Bags

Not only do reusable bags provide a waste-free way to store food, but they’re often made with better materials and built to last.

The seal should be easy to close and durable enough that it won’t break (that defeats the purpose of a reusable bag).

And a personal non-negotiable feature for me- a quality brand of bags available in several different sizes.

20 Pack Silicone Bags
With this pack of 20, you'll have a bag for any and all your needs! It includes 8-gallon, 6-sandwich, and 6-snack. You can use them for freezing and everyday storage.

Budget-Friendly Freezer Bag

For those who are simply looking for bags that provide quality material and a safe way to store food without paying more than necessary

Budget-friendly freezer bags should offer quality material and a safe way to store food without costing more than necessary.

No fancy labeling or colors, just a clear bag that delivers the ability to stash your leftovers, soups, and sliced fruit in the freezer for up to 6 months.

Affordable Half Gallon Freezer Bag
Get the most bang for your buck with these 75-quart bags. This option shares a lot of the features and feels of classic Ziploc bags but at a lower cost and without compromising the safety of your frozen foods.

How to Avoid Freezer Burn When Using Freezer Bags

In order to avoid freezer burn, there are a few factors to consider that don’t involve the quality of the bag itself:

Chill the food
Adding hot food to the freezer will cause the surrounding area to turn warm, which will make condensation inside the bag, which is the perfect recipe for freezer burn. Instead, allow the food to reach room temperature, or chill it overnight.

Set it at 0 degress
Use a thermometer to ensure your freezer is at 0F or a little below, a few degrees above and it’s too warm, and a few degrees too low and it’s too cold.

Add an extra layer
If you plan on freezing the food for a while, go ahead and wrap the bag of food in plastic wrap or aluminum foil.
