Is it Possible to Freeze Homemade French Toast?
Whether you make your favorite French toast recipe in bulk or have a few leftover slices, you can freeze it for another day, and it will taste just as delicious!
Just like when you freeze pancakes, there are some helpful tips that ensure your French toast retains its quality in the freezer until you’re ready to eat it which I share with you below.
How to Freeze French Toast
Once you learn how, you’ll forever love having French toast in the freezer for a delicious convenient breakfast. Here is how:
- Make the French toast
Use your favorite recipe or make a batch of Cinnamon French Toast. - Let them cool down
Once cooked, let the French toast cool down completely at room temperature (not in the fridge). - Line a baking sheet
Lining a baking sheet with parchment paper, wax paper, or a silicone mat ensures that the French toasts don’t stick to the surface once frozen or to each other. - Layer
Make a single layer of French toast on the sheet pan and make sure they don’t touch. If needed, place another piece of parchment paper over the first layer of French toast, and then make a second layer on top, making sure to always have a barrier between the layers. - Freeze
Place the sheet pan with the French toasts in the freezer for an hour or overnight. - Transfer to a freezer-safe zip bag
Once completely frozen, transfer the French toast into a labeled freezer-safe zip bag and keep it in the freezer for up to 2 months.
How Long Can You Freeze French Toast?
Once frozen and stored in a freezer-safe zip bag, you can freeze French toast for up to 2 months without compromising its quality. Make sure to seal the bag well each time you open it to remove a frozen piece.
How to Reheat Frozen French Toast
There are several methods you can use to reheat slices of frozen French toast, including the oven, microwave, toaster, toaster oven, and in a pan.
Reheating frozen French toast in the microwave is the most convenient way to enjoy it when you’re in a hurry although it won’t have those crisp edges you love from when they’re fresh.
If using the microwave, I recommend heating 1 to 2 slices at a time on a plate for about a minute. Depending on how thick the bread is, you might need to go a little longer, flip them over, and heat them for an additional 30 seconds.
How Long To Cook Frozen French Toast
You can heat up frozen French toast in a pan on the stovetop quickly and retain most of its original quality. Heat a large pan over medium-low heat, and once hot, spray it or melt a little butter; place 1 to 2 slices on the hot surface and cook them for about a minute per side.
Can You Put Frozen French Toast in the Toaster?
You can put frozen French toast inside a traditional toaster as long as the French toast slices aren’t too thick. If using Texas toast, use the “bagel” setting if your toaster has it.
If using a toaster oven to reheat them place the frozen French toast directly on the rack so the heat reaches both sides. Follow a medium toast setting.
How to Reheat Frozen French Toast in the Air Fryer
The air fryer is a great place to reheat frozen French toast quickly and get those crispy edges we all love. Place the frozen French toast directly in the basket and air fry at 350F for 3 minutes if you pre-heat the air fryer or 4 minutes if you don’t.
How to Reheat Frozen French Toast in the Oven
The oven is the best method to reheat French Toast while maintaining its original quality, in texture. While not as convenient or fast, you’ll need to preheat the oven to 400F, arrange the French toast on a lined baking sheet, make sure there’s 1 inch of room between each slice, and bake them for 4 minutes per side. Some ovens run hot, so keep an eye out after you flip them.
