How to Freeze Eggs

There are several ways to freeze chicken eggs to keep them fresh for longer. Check out this quick video where I answer the question “can you freeze eggs?” and show you the best methods for freezing and thawing eggs.

It is actually very easy to freeze eggs. If you have more eggs than you can use within a few weeks, then you can always freeze them to preserve them. I always love finding new ways to use my freezer!

How Long Are They Good?

Chicken eggs can be frozen up to a year. This makes them an amazing ingredient to keep on hand for emergency situations.

You can freeze whole eggs, or freeze the yolks and whites separately. You can also freeze your eggs using different containers. You can either use ice cube trays or freezer-safe bags/containers. The method you use is completely up to you.

Freezing Whole Eggs

To freeze whole eggs, you simply mix the eggs together and pour the mixture into either a lightly greased ice cube tray, or a freezer-safe container or bag. If you will need to use individual eggs, it would make more sense to make sure each ice cube tray holds only one egg so that you can easily separate them. If you don’t need to pop out one egg at a time, you can easily pour your egg mixture into a labeled freezer-safe bag or container.

I personally prefer freezing whole eggs, but when I am baking, sometimes I have an extra egg white or yolk that I didn’t need to use and freezing is the perfect way to save it for later. Otherwise, I forget about it in the fridge, and they end up going bad and being thrown out.

Freezing Egg Whites

If you want to freeze the whites and yolks separately, you can do so as well. With egg whites, you simply place one egg white into an ice cube tray. Allow the egg whites to freeze separately on their own, and then combine them into a freezer-safe container or bag.

Freezing Egg Yolks

If you are going to freeze just the yolks, you will need to mix in either salt or sugar in order to prevent thickening. If you will be using the yolk in a main dish later on, add a pinch of salt per each yolk.

If you plan to use the yolks for baking or desserts, add approximately 1 ½ teaspoons of sugar per yolk. Freeze individually in ice cube trays, or in a freezer-safe bag or container.

Can You Freeze Hard-Boiled Eggs?

You do not want to freeze hard-boiled eggs, trust me. The yolk becomes powdery when thawed and the worst part is that the egg-whites become rubbery. It is not an egg you’ll want to eat.

The great news is that hard-boiled eggs keep in the refrigerator for quite a while. You can learn how to make perfect, hard-boiled eggs that are easy to peel in this post.

How to Thaw Eggs

When you are ready to use them, just allow them to thaw in the refrigerator. It’s really as simple as that. This will allow them to stay cool enough when thawing to not go bad. You never want to thaw eggs at room temperature.

Remember to label your bag or container with how many eggs and if you added any seasonings to them so you know what to use, and when!
