A healthy chocolate mug cake that’s perfectly moist, decadent, and made with clean ingredients only is exactly what I’m sharing in today’s blog post.
If that looks like something you might want to dig your spoon into, you’re in the right place.

This mug cake has a double dose of chocolate with cocoa powder and semi-sweet chocolate chips. Made without refined sugar or flours, it’s a guilt-free way to treat yourself to something decadent no matter the time of day.
What Is A Mug Cake?
Mug cakes are the solution when you want something warm, gooey, and chocolaty without turning on the oven. All you need to do is whip up the batter in your favorite mug and microwave it to perfection- the whole process takes less than 2 minutes!
Personally, after testing this recipe for my latest cookbook, I now prefer the texture of a mug cake over a regular cake. It has a delicious soft center with melted almond butter and chocolate chips throughout the fluffy cake. All of that without any dairy, white sugar, or flour!
Healthy Chocolate Mug Cake No Egg
Since it’s one serving, no eggs are required to make this mug cake.
The coconut oil helps bind the ingredients, while the baking powder gives it a nice fluffy rise.
Getting the Best Mug Cake Texture
If done right a mug cake texture is light and souffle-like with a molten center. Done wrong and you get a rubbery, overdone cake. Here’s how to avoid that situation:
Mix it Well
Before you place the mug in the microwave, make sure there are no flour clumps in the batter.
Add Water
A tablespoon of water on top of the cake batter will prevent it from drying out in the microwave.
Don’t Overcook
Keep in mind that all microwaves are different, check on the cake at 30 seconds, and work your way up as needed. It’s done when the top is still slightly sticky. Anything more, and it will dry out.
Ingredients
Before you head to the kitchen, here’s everything you’ll need to make this healthy Chocolate Mug Cake:
- Oat flour: store-bought or make your own oat flour at home in a blender with old-fashioned oats.
- Cocoa powder: makes this mug cake chocolatey.
- Coconut sugar: add sweetness.
- Baking powder: to raise the batter and make it fluffy!
- Salt: enhance the flavors.
- Coconut oil: helps bind all the ingredients.
- Unsweetened almond milk: makes this recipe dairy-free.
- Almond butter: or your favorite nut-butter alternative.
- Semi-sweet chocolate chips: regular or dairy-free.

How to Make Healthy Chocolate Mug Cake
I don’t know what’s better, the fact that this mug cake is ready to enjoy in less than a minute or it’s a clean treat that tastes just as decadent as the classic recipe made with oil, sugar, and butter. I’ll let you decide.
Here’s the sweet and simple process for making healthy chocolate mug cakes:
- Grab a mug
Add the oat flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, and salt. - Add the Liquid
Stir in the coconut oil and milk until the mixture is smooth. Drop a tablespoon of almond butter into the center and push it down into the batter- it’ll melt into chocolatey, almond buttery goodness. - Add the Sprinkles
This is a chocolate dessert, after all, so top it off with chocolate chips. - Nuke it
Microwave on high for 30 seconds to 1 minute. Check around the 30-second make to see if it’s cooked through. - Grab a Spoon

A few more tips to make sure your mug cake is perfectly moist and fluffy:
Don’t Swap the Flour
This recipe is tried and true- trust the process and your cake will come out perfect.
Grease the Mug
To prevent the cake from sticking to the side of your favorite coffee mug, lightly grease it with coconut oil or cooking spray.
Why Not Make it Molten?
Add a tablespoon of homemade Nutella, caramel, or a chocolate truffle to the batter’s center, and thank me later! By the way, those recipes are also inside the Clean Treats Cookbook!
