Can You Make Toast without a Toaster?

Whether your toaster is broken or you don’t have one, there are many ways to make toast without a toaster, like using the oven or the air fryer. Today I’ll explain to you how to toast bread in a pan.

That same pan you usually use to cook veggies or chicken can also toast slices of bread perfectly and quickly! You don’t have to use oil or butter, so there’s no clean-up at all!

Just set the stove at the right temperature and in less than 3 minutes, you’ll have toast ready to enjoy with butter or your favorite toast toppings.

How to Make Toast in a Pan

Toast in a pan? Super easy! Preheat the pan, place the bread, and get ready to enjoy slices of bread toasted to golden and crispy perfection.

Here is how to make toast without a toaster:

1. Prep the pan
Preheat the pan to medium heat.

2. Place the bread
Place the bread on the pan. Do NOT use butter or oil on the pan or the bread.

3. Toast
Toast the bread for about 1 minute until it reaches a golden, crispy texture. You can use a spatula to check it. Flip the bread over to the other side and toast for about another minute.

4. Remove and enjoy!
Turn off the heat, remove the toast from the pan, and spread butter, jam, or your favorite toppings.

Easy, right? And it gets even easier after you watch this quick video:

When to Place the Bread on the Pan

Once you turn on the stove at medium heat, you need to wait until it is hot enough to place the toast. You’ll know it’s ready when you hold your hand over the pan -do NOT touch it!- and can feel the heat.

Another way to check if the pan is hot is the water test: add a few drops of water into the pan, and if it sizzles, it’s ready to toast your bread.

When to Flip Toast

At medium heat, it takes about 1 minute for the bread to get toasty. You may want your bread more or less crispy and golden, so grab a spatula to lift it and check. Once it’s toasty enough according to your taste, flip it over!

How Long Does it Take to Make Toast without a Toaster?

This pan method is super quick! It takes about 30 seconds for the pan to be hot enough, and then you toast the slices of bread for about 1 minute on each side. Meaning, toast is ready in less than 3 minutes!

Making toast in the oven using the broiling setting is the quickest method -just 1 minute- but you must stand by the oven since the bread can burn easily. If you use the baking setting, it will take 10 minutes.

The air fryer method is another easy and quick way to make toast, and it only takes 3 minutes. Bonus: you don’t have to keep an eye on it!
