Tired of finding soggy or limp cucumbers in the fridge? I feel you. Keeping them fresh is key to using them in salads or grabbing them for a quick snack.

In this simple guide, you’ll learn how to keep cucumbers fresh for days so that they retain their crunch and flavor.

Choosing Fresh Cucumbers

At a glance, the freshest cucumbers will not have any light spots or dents on them, and they should be a dark green all around.

Once you pick up the cucumber, it should feel firm and not squishy or dented. A soft or squishy cucumber indicates that it’s past the ripeness and starting to slowly rot inside.

How to Store Cucumbers to Keep Them Fresh

Once you get the cucumbers home, storing them properly is key to keeping them fresh.

  1. Clean the cucumbers
Wash the cucumbers in water to remove any dirt.
  2. Wrap
Grab a paper towel and wrap it around the freshly washed cucumbers.
  3. Store
Place the wrapped cucumbers into the crisper drawer in your fridge.

Keeping Sliced Cucumbers Fresh

While you can store them whole, slicing cucumbers ahead of time can be a big time saver when it comes to prepping healthy lunches and at snack time. Here are some tips to help them last longer once sliced:

Absorb excess moisture
Place a single paper towel at the bottom of the container or on top of the cucumbers.

Store in an airtight container
Once you have the cucumbers sliced, place them in an airtight container.

Store them in water
Alternatively, you can slice the cucumbers and place them in a jar. Fill the jar with water, and close the lid. Change the water in the jar daily for up to 3 days.

How Long do Cucumbers Last in the Fridge

Whole cucumbers can stay fresh in the fridge for up to 2 weeks, while sliced cucumbers can last 2 to 3 days.

To get the most freshness out of your cucumbers, keep them whole until you’re ready to serve them. There is really no need to slice them right away unless you’re planning on eating them right away.

If you purchase a few cucumbers at a time, slice them as needed to make the most out of your grocery purchase.

Keeping Cucumbers Fresh in the Lunchbox

If you’re sending sliced cucumbers with the kids to eat at lunch for a snack, you can keep them fresh easily by pat drying the cucumber slices with a paper towel to absorb any excess moisture after slicing.

You can also wrap them in a paper towel and then inside their own small container or zip bag.

Since cucumbers will be enjoyed within a few hours, there’s no need to worry about refrigeration. That said, it’s always a great idea to add an ice pack inside the lunch bag on hot days.
