Tender meat, caramelized veggies, and melty cheese make this Philly cheesesteak skillet one you’ll want to serve often!

Quick Philly Cheesesteaks
Philly cheesesteak is my husband’s favorite sandwich, and who can blame him? Deliciously cheesy meat and veggies inside two slices of bread is PERFECTION. I even created my taco version of it, and, ahem, my Philly cheesesteak tacos are always a hit.
Back to this sandwich. Some recipes call for ribeye steak or sirloin, but this busy gal decided to make this sandwich a really quick dinner that involves as little time in the kitchen as possible. The solution? Philly cheesesteak skillet with deli roast beef!
All the ingredients come together fast in a skillet (very little clean-up!), and just like that, you have mouthwatering sandwiches to indulge everyone.

What You Need
An epic homemade Philly cheesesteak skillet is made with simple and flavorful ingredients, and none of them are complicated! Here’s what you need and why:
- Bread: hoagie rolls are the classic choice for this sandwich.
- Button mushrooms: add flavor and bulk up the filling.
- Olive oil: for cooking.
- Bell pepper: I use green and red, but the color is up to you.
- Onion: adds a caramelized flavor that makes this sandwich irresistible!
- Garlic: did anyone say more flavor and aroma? Here it is!
- Deli roast beef: my favorite cut to save time. You can use cooked ribeye, sirloin, or leftovers of other tender meat.
- Cheese: I love this sandwich with shredded mozzarella or sliced provolone cheese. Do you prefer Swiss or American? Go ahead!
How to Make Philly Cheesesteaks in a Skillet
One skillet and 20 minutes are all it takes to make Philly cheesesteaks for your family! Before you start drooling, check out the quick steps:
- Sauté the veggies
Use a skillet to sauté mushrooms, bell peppers, onions, and garlic. They’ll be ready when you see that the onions are translucent and the peppers are soft. - Warm the bread
While the veggies are cooking, warm the hoagie rolls in the oven for 7 to 10 minutes. - Warm the steak
Since it’s already cooked, you add it to the skillet to warm it up and mix it with the veggies. - Make it cheesy!
Time to sprinkle cheese over the veggies and the steak! Cover with a lid for a minute to melt it. - Serve
Stuff the hoagie rolls or subs with the Philly cheesesteak skillet mixture, and enjoy!
How to Serve It
Hoagie sandwiches are the most traditional way to enjoy a Philly cheesesteak, and it is definitely one of my favorites! I also love this cheesy goodness with rice or served on a baked potato. When I want to keep this meal low-carb, it’s perfect to top a salad.

Storing Leftovers
Philly cheesesteak skillet disappears fast! But if you happen to have leftovers or double the batch for future meals, store them in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3-4 days.
Philly Cheesesteak Skillet

Ingredients
- 4 sub or hoagie rolls
- 8 oz button mushrooms, sliced
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 green bell pepper, sliced thin
- 1 red bell pepper, sliced thin
- 1 medium onion, sliced thin
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- ½ lb deli roast beef, sliced thin and coarsely chopped
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella or
- 8 slices provolone cheese
Instructions
Cook the filling:
- Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Once hot, add 1 tablespoon of oil and distribute it around the pan. Add the sliced mushrooms, sliced bell peppers, onions, and garlic, and continue to cook, stirring throughout, until the onions are translucent and the peppers are soft for about 5 to 7 minutes.
- Once the veggies are tender, add the chopped deli roast beef to the pan. Stir to combine it with the veggies and cook it for about 2 minutes, until warm. Turn off the heat.
Assemble:
- Cover the contents of the pan with the shredded mozzarella cheese or the sliced Provolone. Cover the pan with the lid for a minute, just long enough to melt the cheese.
- While the veggies cook, warm the hoagie rolls in the oven at 350F for 7 to 10 minutes. Remove them from the oven, slice them in half, and stuff them with the Philly cheese steak mixture in the skillet.
