Add cocoa to the classic overnight oats and enjoy a terrific morning meal that’s tasty and nutritious.

Cocoa Overnight Oats
These chocolate overnight oats celebrate the chocolate lover in all of us. The one who waits for cold weather to make an epic homemade hot cocoa or adds it to her weekend pancakes.
These let me indulge on a weekday while still eating a nutritious breakfast, just like my chocolate peanut butter overnight oats and my chocolate protein powder overnight oats.
What You Need
To make these overnight oats, you’ll use milk (regular or non-dairy) to dissolve the cocoa powder, along with honey or maple syrup (to sweeten) and vanilla for flavor, regular or Greek yogurt to make them creamy (or more milk), and old-fashioned oats as the base.
How to Make Chocolate Overnight Oatmeal
- In a bowl, whisk cocoa powder into milk with honey and vanilla until no visible clumps remain. Add the yogurt and oats and mix.
- Refrigerate the mixture for 4 hours or overnight. You can keep it in the bowl or store it divided into jars.
- Enjoy the overnight oats with your favorite oatmeal toppings, cold or warmed in the microwave.
Mix-Ins and Toppings
You can make these chocolate overnight oats even tastier and nutritious with these mix-ins and topping ideas:
- Nuts or seeds: unsalted raw chopped nuts & seeds are best.
- Fresh or frozen fruit: they can be added to the oats or on top. If you use bigger fruits, slice them into smaller pieces.
- Banana: 1 small mashed banana can be added to the liquid mixture.
- Nut butters: peanut butter, almond butter, and seed butters are great for adding into the mixture or as a topping. You can also add 1-2 tablespoons of PB powder.
- Granola: great as a topping.
Chocolate Overnight Oats

Ingredients
- 1 cup milk, any
- 3 tablespoons honey or maple syrup
- 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- ½ cup yogurt, regular or Greek
- 1 cup old-fashioned oats
Instructions
Prep:
- In a large bowl, combine the milk, honey, cocoa powder, and vanilla. Whisk until the cocoa powder dissolves into the milk, leaving no visible clumps.
- Add the yogurt and oats to the bowl and mix. I really like using vanilla Greek yogurt. It sweetens and adds flavor at the same time.
- Divide the oat mixture into two jars or cover the bowl (or storage container) with a lid.
Refrigerate:
- Refrigerate for 4 hours or overnight.
Serve:
- In the morning, enjoy cold or warmed up for 30 to 60 seconds in the microwave, topped with your favorite toppings.
Notes
- The sweetness of these overnight oats will vary depending on the type of milk you use. Plant milks with vanilla flavor (both sweetened or unsweetened) work great.
- Greek yogurt or regular can be used, with Greek yogurt providing more protein and a creamier texture.
- You can omit the yogurt by adding ½ cup of additional milk.
- Nuts or seeds: opt for unsalted raw chopped nuts & seeds.
- Fruit: both fresh and frozen fruit work. Can be added to the oats or on top. Bigger fruits should be sliced.
- Banana: 1 small mashed banana can be added to the liquid mixture.
- Nut butters: peanut butter, almond butter, and seed butters are great for topping or adding into the mixture or as a topping. You can also add 1-2 tablespoons of PB powder.
- Granola: as a topping.
