This ingredient is a pantry staple for a reason, and by the end of this post, you’ll know how to create this multi-purpose flour and use it to create all sorts of delicious things.

Can You Make Almond Flour at Home?

Almond flour is a great grain-free flour option to make some of the traditional wheat-based recipes and can easily be made at home.

You’ll need to start with blanched almonds, meaning almonds that have been peeled and have no skin.

Then, you take the blanched almonds and process them in the food processor until they reach a fine, powdery consistency, and this is done in less than 2 minutes!

This post shares all the tips for making almond flour at home using a food processor, although you can also use a blender instead.

From there, you can use it to create whatever your heart desires. Looking for ideas that involve something sweet? Check out my latest cookbook:

What You Need to Make Almond Flour

To make almond flour, you’ll need blanched almonds whose skin has been removed. Processing almonds with the skin on them will make almond meal.

How to Make Almond Flour

Alright, grab those almonds and follow the step-by-step directions for perfect almond flour:

  1. Process
Transfer the blanched almonds to a food processor or blender and process until the flour has a sand-like consistency.
  2. Check for large pieces
Use your fingers to sift through and check for larger flecks of almond. If needed, reprocess until everything is super fine.
  3. Sift
Transfer the almond flour to a mesh sieve or flour sifter and sift. This is the final step and chance to remove any large pieces and leave you with perfect almond flour.
  4. Store
Place the almond flour in an airtight container and store it in a cool place for up to 3 months- the freezer is perfect!

Of course, you can watch the entire process above in this quick video:

Blanched Almonds vs. Unblanched for Flour

Almond flour is made with blanched almonds, which are almonds whose skin has been removed by soaking in boiling water to separate the skin from the almond. This gives almond flour a fine texture.

Unblanched almonds are almonds with the skin still on. When ground, this is called almond meal, which is thicker and coarser than almond flour.

When a recipe calls for almond flour, it’s essential to use blanched almonds since almond meal has a coarser texture and will make the baked goods denser.
