New Orleans Stuffed Snowballs

Jump to Recipe·Print Recipe

These New Orleans Stuffed Snowballs are a fun way to combat the summer heat!

New Orleans Stuffed Snowballs with Dreyer's Vanilla Ice Cream

Before moving to New Orleans, I had never heard of a snowball, much less of a stuffed snowball. I learned about them a few years later, after I had kids, and their grandparents would celebrate summer with a deliciously sweet treat.

Luckily for my kids, snowball stands are easy to find where we live. It is, after all, a New Orleans tradition. But what about most days, when we are home, playing in the back yard during a hot summer afternoon and we need something fun to cool off with? Homemade snowballs to the rescue!

First off, I have to credit my daughter for “inventing” this homemade process. As you can imagine, we spend a lot of time in the kitchen but my favorite moments are those where I have my kids with me creating the recipes that have a rich history. And this one, my friends, is one we are super excited to share with you!

To bring you this recipe and how-to video, I’ve partnered with Edy’s and Dreyer’s Slow Churned Simple Recipes light ice cream since their ice cream is the one I purchase because it’s free of artificial colors or flavors and it has half the fat of full-fat ice cream without compromising the rich delicious taste or creaminess.

Can you imagine how a small scoop of Dreyer’s Slow Churned Vanilla light ice cream will transform a regular snowball into a delicious treat? Oh wait, you don’t have to “imagine” it, you can just watch this quick video where my daughter and I show you how to make the shaved ice at home.

Of course, going along with using all natural ingredients, we used orange juice and grape juice to make our snowballs.

Video day was such a success that word spread fast among my kids’ friends and all of the sudden they all wanted a snowball party. Of course, how could we not make the time together a little richer without stuffing these snowballs as well?

Ok, maybe we went a little overboard by renting a water slide and hiring an on-location snowball stand to serve our neighborhood. I will say, though, that the rich, creamy deliciousness of Dreyer’s Slow Churned Vanilla light ice cream made every flavor that much better.

But remember, this is about creating your own fun memories with your family and friends with the things you already have at home, and what better way than with a blender?

If you have ice, a blender, fruit juice, and rich creamy ice cream; you can make this recipe!

Using your favorite fruit juice, mine is grape juice, while Sofia loves orange juice, and some ice cream, you blend, and well, all there is left to do is enjoy!

And that’s how we ended up with a traditional New Orleans stuffed snowball at home. Playing around in the kitchen, enjoying our sweet moments together and making great memories.

We got to love snowballs in our 4 years living in New Orleans :). Excited for this home made version while sweating in AZ! We love ice cream on family night as a rootbeer float, banana split or just plain :).
