These chocolate waffles have soft middles and crisp exteriors, making each bite irresistible.

Rich Chocolate Waffles
I usually make buttermilk waffles, but every now and then, my kids ask for something chocolatey, and that's when these chocolate waffles happen.
They're perfect for a relaxed weekend breakfast or when you want to celebrate, and there’s no need for sprinkles. In that case, I always recommend my birthday waffles.
What You Need
Unsweetened cocoa powder adds chocolate flavor, balanced by a little extra sugar, which people prefer. Then, traditional waffle ingredients like all-purpose flour, baking powder and baking soda (yes, both for the ultimate texture), and a little salt. Eggs, milk (whatever you use), melted butter or vegetable oil for moisture, and vanilla for flavor.
How to Make Chocolate Waffles
Nothing out of the ordinary, but some tips so yours turn out perfect include:
- Mix the dry ingredients really well until the dry mixture is all brown and little to no visible white flour areas are left.
- Combine the wet ingredients in a separate bowl. Then add them to the dry ingredients bowl, and mix to combine.
- Wait 5 minutes for the batter to settle, so the first waffle is as good as the last. Meanwhile, preheat your waffle iron.
- Cook the chocolate batter in a waffle iron for about 3 to 4 minutes, until the outside of the waffles are dark brown and most of the steam is gone.
- Serve them with sliced berries, whipped cream, and a drizzle of chocolate pancake syrup.

Done vs Burnt
Since these waffles are brown, it’s hard to see when they’re burnt. In this case, they’re overcooked when the middles are dry. Avoid this by checking for doneness when there’s little to no steam escaping from the sides of the waffle maker.

Easy Chocolate Waffles

Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- ½ cup cocoa powder
- ½ cup sugar
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- ½ teaspoon baking soda
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 2 eggs
- 2 cups milk
- 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, ⅓ cup melted
Instructions
Make the waffle batter:
- In a large bowl, combine the flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- In a separate bowl, whisk the eggs. Then add the milk, melted butter, and vanilla.
- Add the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients bowl, and stir to combine. Let the batter sit for 5 minutes. Meanwhile, preheat the waffle iron.
Cook the waffles:
- Heat the waffle maker to your preferred setting. If your waffle maker has an adjustable temperature setting, I recommend setting it to medium-high. Grease it if necessary. The outside of these is on the crisp side, and the inside is cake-like.
- Scoop some of the batter into the center of the hot waffle maker and spread it out with the back of the scoop towards the edges without over-filling it. Close the lid and cook until darker brown, about 3 minutes. Usually, when the waffle iron stops steaming, they're ready. Repeat with the remaining batter.
Serve & Store:
- Serve these chocolate waffles with your favorite toppings and syrups. Refrigerate leftovers for up to 3 days or freeze for up to 3 months.
Notes
- Add ½ to 1 teaspoon instant coffee or instant espresso to bring out the rich chocolate flavor of this recipe.
- Omit the salt if your butter is salted.
