Learn to make no-milk French toast with this recipe and the tips here.

Can You Make French Toast Without Milk?
Yes, you can make incredible French toast without milk because I’ve been doing it since 2006 for my son, who can’t stand the texture of cooked eggs. This egg-only version cooks up perfectly without any substitutes.
Maybe you’re in a no-milk situation this weekend, and instead of making pancakes without milk, you’ve decided to try your hand at French toast. I’m so glad you’re here. This recipe is simple, and it consistently turns out great.
Ingredients
This recipe has the ingredients you’d expect from French toast, except the milk. Sliced bread, eggs, a little sugar, plenty of cinnamon, and vanilla. I also added a tiny bit of water to stretch the whisked eggs so the mixture soaks up perfectly.

How to Make French Toast without Milk
I use a square or rectangular baking dish to whisk the soaking mixture and dip my bread slices, which only need to soak for about 10 seconds per side. Then, I immediately place them on the hot pan and cook them for about 2 minutes per side.
To prevent your French toast from getting soggy, only soak as many pieces of toast as you can fit and cook at once in the pan.
Other Substitutes for Milk in French Toast
While this recipe does not contain milk of any kind, you can substitute milk in traditional recipes with a dairy-free alternative, like in my French toast with almond milk recipe.
Best Breads to Use
Traditionally, French toast is made with thicker bread slices, such as Texas toast, Italian bread, brioche, and hearty slices of bread, since they work well to soak up the wet mixture. The reality, however, is that most of us make this breakfast classic with slices of sandwich bread, which is what I used in the recipe card below.
The Best French Toast without Milk

Watch how it’s made:
Ingredients
- 8 slices of sandwich bread, regular toast size
- 6 eggs
- 1 tablespoon water
- 1 tablespoon sugar, optional
- 1 ½ teaspoons cinnamon
- 2 ½ teaspoons vanilla
Instructions
Whisk the egg mixture:
- In a 9×13-inch baking dish, whisk the eggs well, making sure the egg whites are fully mixed in. Add the water, sugar, vanilla, and cinnamon, and whisk to combine.
Dip the bread slices:
- Place 2 slices of bread into the egg mixture long enough to soak the first side well, then flip the bread over and soak up just enough of the egg mixture to wet it for about 10 seconds. Dip as many slices as you'll fit in your pan. Do not keep them in the mixture.
Cook the French toast:
- Heat a large, nonstick pan over medium heat. Once hot, grease with butter or spray and place 2 slices of bread in the middle of the pan. Cook for 2 minutes or until golden brown.
- Using a spatula, flip the French toast over and cook for 2 to 3 more minutes until the second side has browned. During the last minute, reduce the heat to medium and cover. You know the French toast is done cooking when the middles puff up and no longer feel wet. Remove them from the pan, soak up the next two slices, and repeat the process.
Serve:
- Enjoy them topped with butter, syrup, and your favorite toppings.
