Having the dry ingredients pre-measured in a waffle mix has been great for my family because anyone can grab a bag from the pantry and make waffles without the mess of measuring.
And now, thanks to this homemade waffle mix recipe, you’ll be able to say YES to waffles any day of the week, because you’ll be able to pull them off in a matter of minutes!
All you have to do is grab a pre-measured bag from the pantry and turn it into batter by adding milk, egg, and butter. The end result is delicious waffles like these, the only difference might be the shape of your waffle maker.
Is Waffle Mix the Same as Pancake Mix?

Waffle Mix Ingredients
In the recipe card below, you’ll find the amounts of each ingredient that goes inside each waffle mix bag. Before you make any swaps, here are a few ingredient notes:
- All-purpose flour: the foundation of any waffle recipe.
- Baking powder: gives waffles an airy texture when exposed to heat in the waffle maker.
- Sugar: a little is added to each batch to give the waffles their golden exterior on both sides and sweeten the batter a bit.
- Salt: to enhance the batter flavors.
How to Make Waffle Mix
I prefer to use quart-sized zip bags when I make waffle mix. This means that each zip bag is a single batch of batter that yields 6 waffles. This might depend on the waffle maker and size you have. A few tips for each step:
- Prep the mix bags
I use a permanent marker to write down the ingredients needed on the bags before filling them. To speed up the filling process, I flip the tops over to keep the bags open and line them up assembly-style. - Measure and fill
I fill all the bags with one ingredient before moving on to the next ingredient. This makes the measuring and filling step go really fast! - Store
Once you’ve filled the bags with the dry ingredients, remove any excess air, zip it closed, and keep them in the pantry for up to 6 months. - Make waffles
In a large bowl, you’ll combine one pre-measured bag of waffle mix with the ingredients listed: milk, egg, and butter. Make the batter and pour it into the waffle maker.
How to Store Homemade Waffle Mix
You’ll love the convenience of storing your homemade waffle mix inside quart-sized zip bags. The dry mix should be stored in the pantry, never in the fridge or freezer, for up to 6 months.
How Long Does it Last?
The dry waffle mix lasts up to 6 months in the pantry. Once you add the other ingredients and make the batter, you can keep the waffle batter overnight in the fridge.
Making the Waffles
Making the waffles is simple! Grab a big bowl, dump the pre-measured contents of one bag, and add the ingredients listed: milk, egg, and melted butter. Then mix it with a whisk until a smooth batter forms. Stop mixing when there are no visible lumps.
It’s also important to pre-heat your waffle maker. This varies by model but essentially, you want to pour the batter onto the hot plates to ensure the waffles are nice and crispy on the outside and the middles cook through.
What Does Waffle Batter Look Like
The texture of good waffle batter is a little thinner than pancake batter but not too liquid. I recommend not filling the waffle maker’s cavity too full since the waffle batter will expand during cooking and any excess will overflow on the sides. Waffles cook on both sides at the same time so they don’t need to be flipped.

Waffles make the perfect base for incredible waffle toppings and a variety of breakfast syrups. They can be topped with fresh fruit, roasted apples or roasted strawberries, your favorite nut butter, or kept classic with a little butter and pancake syrup.
Homemade Waffle Mix

Ingredients
For the Waffle Mix:
- 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- 3 teaspoons baking powder
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- ½ teaspoon salt
To make waffles add:
- 1 ½ cups milk
- 1 egg
- 3 tablespoons butter, melted
Instructions
Prep:
- With a permanent marker, write on the outside of each bag the wet ingredients needed to turn the waffle mix into batter:1 ½ cups milk, 1 egg, 3 tablespoons butter
- Flip the tops of the zip bags over to hold them open and make an assembly line with the bags. Each bag will make one batch of waffle batter.
Mix the dry ingredients:
- Fill each bag with the amount of flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt listed above. Mix the ingredients around with a spoon and zip to seal the bag. Filling all the bags with one ingredient before moving on to the next makes this a quick process.
Store:
- Store the bags in the pantry for up to 6 months.
To make waffles:
- Empty the pre-measured dry waffle mix into a large batter bowl. Make a well in the middle and add the milk, egg, and butter. With a fork, break up the egg first, and then mix the ingredients until all visible lumps are gone.
- Heat the waffle maker first, and once hot, grease or spray it if necessary. Some non-stick waffles do not require greasing.
- Ladle waffle batter into each cavity, close the waffle iron top and cook the waffles until they're golden on both sides and lift easily from the waffle maker. Repeat with the remaining waffle batter.
- Serve the waffles topped with butter, syrup, and your favorite toppings.

I just realized I have never left a review. I have been making this recipe for a couple years now, everytime I make this recipe, I make one extra while I have the measuring cups out. That way I only have to dirty my cups every other time. This has always cooked up perfectly. I will say, the batter fluffs up nicely if you let it sit for a few minutes, because the last few waffles are always the fluffiest. So pour batter knowing this. When I forget, my 3rd one usually gushes out even with the same amount of batter used. Thanks for this lovely recipe. I haven’t bought pre-mixed pancake/waffle batter in years. I love that I can use the best quality ingredients, and not have to worry about additives.
