Hot honey is the perfect sweet and spicy drizzle you need in your life. Why buy it when you can make it?

Easy Hot Honey

My son came home from a sleepover and announced, “I’m a hot honey fan, Mom! Jack’s mom has a recipe, so you need to learn how to make it, please.”

*Grabs phone, texts his friends’ mom* “Hi…. ” 5 minutes later, she texts back with the recipe and her tips! #You’reWelcomeSon.

What Is Hot Honey

Hot honey is a sweet sauce with a kick of heat made with honey and a spicy ingredient like red pepper flakes or whole red chili pepper. I added a bit of apple cider vinegar to cut down on the sweetness and let the heat from the peppers shine.

Can I use Red Chili Peppers?

If you’re wondering this, you probably love spicy things! Using whole red chili peppers will yield a spicier honey. Simply chop 2 red chili peppers per cup of honey and omit the flakes from the recipe. Follow the rest of the steps.

Making Hot Honey

With just 3 ingredients and a saucepan, you can make hot honey at home that will never spoil! Here is the simple step-by-step:

  1. Simmer
Combine honey and red pepper flakes in a small saucepan and bring to a simmer, stirring as needed.
  2. Infuse the heat
Turn off the heat and let the hot honey sit for 10 to 15 minutes. The longer it sits, the spicier it will be.
  3. Add the vinegar
It's just to cut the sweetness; you won't taste it. You can skip this step.
  4. Strain
You can strain the pepper flakes or leave them there for decoration.
  5. Storage
Pour the hot honey into a jar and store it in your pantry indefinitely.

Do You Have to Strain the Red Pepper Flakes?

You can keep the red pepper flakes in the honey; however, they’ll eventually stop releasing their oils, so they’re simply there for aesthetic purposes. This is totally up to you!

How to Serve It / How to Use It

This hot honey is the perfect sweet and spicy drizzle over pizza, chicken, a bowl of oats, and over cottage cheese toast!

Is the Vinegar necessary?

No, in fact, you can leave it out completely. The vinegar cuts down on the sweetness and lets the spice shine through, but you can’t taste it.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup honey
  • 3 tablespoons crushed red pepper flakes
  • 2 teaspoons apple cider vinegar*

Instructions

Make it hot:

  • Measure and add the honey and red pepper flakes into a small saucepan. Turn the heat on to medium and bring the mixture to a light simmer, stirring a few times throughout. Simmer it for 2 minutes while stirring, and turn off the heat.

Infuse:

  • Let the hot honey sit, with the heat turned off, for 10 to 15 minutes. The mixture will cool down as it sits. Taste test it after 10 minutes; the longer it sits, the more intense the heat.
  • Add the apple cider vinegar to the spicy honey and mix to combine.

Strain (optional):

  • Once the honey is spicy or mild enough for your liking, strain it through a fine mesh strainer into a jar. Otherwise, transfer it directly into a jar as is.

Storage:

  • Store the hot honey in a sealed jar in your pantry (indefinitely).

Notes

  • Using whole red chili peppers will yield a spicier honey. Simply chop 2 red chili peppers per cup of honey and omit the flakes from the recipe. Follow the rest of the steps.
  • You can omit the vinegar completely. The vinegar cuts down on the sweetness and lets the spice shine through, but you can’t taste it.
  • Straining is optional. Once all the spicy oils are released into the honey, the pepper flakes will be there for decoration.
