How to Make Blueberry Coffee Cake
Here's an overview of the steps and you’ll also find a video in the recipe card:
- Combine.
Combine the dry ingredients and then add the wet ingredients. Mix on low speed with your mixer until there are no visible clumps. The batter will be thick; that's ok! - Add the blueberries.
Once the batter is ready, add the blueberries, folding them gently. Pour the mix into a greased baking dish. - Make the crumble.
First, combine flour with sugar. Add the cold butter and mix it with your hands. You want a sand-like texture. Sprinkle over the batter. - Bake.
The blueberry coffee cake is ready when a toothpick inserted in the middle comes out clean.

Laura’s Tips for Blueberry Coffee Cake
While the batter calls for softened butter, use cold and cubed butter for the best crumble texture.
In a preheated oven at 350F, this blueberry coffee cake is done after 50 to 60 minutes of baking. That said, not all ovens are the same, so make sure to insert a toothpick in the center to check doneness. If it comes out clean or with a few breadcrumbs, you know the cake is ready, and it’s time to remove it from the oven.
Once the cake has cooled down fully, cover it with plastic wrap or place it in a lidded container. It can stay on the counter for 2 days or in the fridge for 5 days. You can also freeze leftovers by wrapping individual pieces with plastic wrap or inside zip bags for up to 2 months.
What to Serve with It
As a coffee lover, one slice of this blueberry coffee cake with a classic New Orleans cafe au lait or a cup of instant iced coffee on warm days is a perfect treat. My kids love this cake with my homemade hot cocoa or a healthy smoothie. We often add fresh fruit on the side or a dollop of Greek Yogurt on top.

The cake turned out amazing and we had it for breakfast. I made few changes as follow to reduce few calories: semi skimmed milk, low fat greek yogurt, and reduced streusel to half. Thank you for a superb recipe.

Amazing! Great substitutes. So glad you enjoyed it.
Cindy says
Can you use sour cream in place of yogurt? I’ve made this several times and have always used Greek yogurt but my neighbor brought me blueberries and I am out of yogurt.
Laura Fuentes says
You absolutely can Cindy. Enjoy!
Beth says
Delicious! Since this cake has milk, yogurt, and blueberries, does it need to be refrigerated?
Laura Fuentes says
You can leave it out for 24 hours in an airtight container, but yes, refrigerate for up to 5 days…if it last that long 😉

This was admittedly delicious and the family devoured it. But, unless you know of some magical butter that is low in calories, this is NOT light. There are 13 tablespoons of butter. that’s 10 grams of fat per serving before adding any of the other ingredients.
Laura Fuentes says
Hi Erica, I am so glad this recipe was a succes and loved by your family. The recipe has 1/2 cup of butter, which is 4 tablespoons. That’s 5.4g per serving.
Erica says
I will definitely make it again for company!
Laura Fuentes says
Yes sorry, I had a mom-moment! It is 8 tablespoons, and I fixed the fat content, it is 5.4g/serving. Thanks for catching that.
