Can You Make French Toast Without Cinnamon
While cinnamon is a classic ingredient in French toast that gives it a delicious flavor, it’s also non-essential; therefore, it’s possible to make a great-tasting breakfast without it.
I’ve modified my classic cinnamon French toast recipe to make this version just as delicious, also sweet, and cooked to perfection with crisp golden edges you’re going to love.
So whether you’ve run out or can’t eat cinnamon, you’re going to love this recipe!
Ingredients
French toast can taste delicious without cinnamon when you use the following ingredients:
- Eggs + milk: the base of any French toast liquid mixture that will be soaked up by the bread.
- Vanilla extract: essential to add sweetness and flavor since we’re omitting the cinnamon. I also include a few other things you can use instead below.
- Sugar: a little, so it caramelizes and gives the bread a golden exterior. Can be omitted.
- Salt: a pinch to enhance the vanilla and sweetness, you can leave it out, but highly recommend it.
- Bread: use thick Texas toast, Italian bread, country loaf, or sliced sourdough. Read more about the best bread for French toast here.
*You'll find the ingredient amounts in the recipe card below.

Cinnamon Substitutes for French Toast
Cinnamon is a classic ingredient in French toast recipes but if you can’t have it or you ran out, you can add flavor to the milk and egg mixture with pumpkin spice, a pinch of nutmeg, or apple pie spice.
I also recommend using vanilla or almond extract in the liquid mixture for flavor.
How to Make French Toast without Cinnamon
Make an incredible French toast breakfast for your family with these easy steps:
- Make the egg + milk mixture
Combine all the ingredients in a large shallow dish. - Lightly soak the bread
Soak each slice of bread for about 30 seconds on each side, just before cooking. I do two at a time, cook, repeat. - Cook the French Toast:
Cook the soaked bread slices for about 2 minutes on the first side; flip and cook until the middle is puffy and the exterior is golden.
Best Toppings
These toasts without cinnamon taste incredible on their own; they make the perfect base for French toast toppings like fresh fruit, like banana slices or berries. You can also drizzle some Strawberry Syrup, Blueberry Syrup, maple syrup, and dust in some powdered sugar!
