These cinnamon roasted apple slices are full of flavor and can be enjoyed alone, over pancakes, with ice cream or topped with whipped cream.

Roasted apple slices are the easiest dessert to make and they taste just like the inside of an apple pie. Enjoy them by the spoonful or atop your favorite dessert.

The total time is about 35 minutes, but the prep is minimal. They taste delicious, and when you serve them with ice cream, you completely forget about the crust.

Best Apples for Roasting

Crispy, tart apples like Granny Smith, Pink Lady, and Honey Crisp can hold their shape and make the ideal apples for pies and roasting. The oven and addition of lemon juice bring out their sweetness and reduces down the sugars into a delicious caramel-like glaze. We’re talking SERIOUS flavor.

Another bonus with this recipe is the intoxicating scent that will perfume your house as it bakes. There are so many ways to use these sliced roasted apples but my favorite is over a huge stack of fluffy apple oat pancakes!

Ingredients

Fresh apple slices and a handful of pantry staples are all it takes to make this simple dessert. You’ll find the ingredient measurements in the recipe card at the end of the post, but first, check what you'll need:

  • Apples: tart apples, like Granny Smith, Pink Lady, and Honey Crisp, hold their shape better in the oven.
  • Brown sugar: light or dark. It adds a softer texture and more flavor than white sugar.
  • Cinnamon: apples and cinnamon are BFF!
  • Butter: helps to create the sweet mixture while adding flavor. You can swap it for coconut oil.
  • Vanilla extract: more dessert-like taste!
  • Cornstarch: makes the apples crispy. You can use tapioca starch instead.

How to Prep the Apples for Roasting

The apples need to be cored and sliced into ¼-inch thick slices. Peeling is optional, but I usually leave the skins on.

Once sliced, make sure to sprinkle the apples with lemon juice to prevent them from browning as you move on with the recipe.

How to Serve Roasted Apples

Once you’ve made a batch of roasted apple slices, they’ll last for a few days in the refrigerator, so you can use them all week in any number of ways. A few of my favorites ideas below:

  • Over hot oatmeal
  • Stirred into overnight oats
  • On top of pancakes
  • Over a bowl of vanilla ice cream
  • With a slice of pound cake
