Turn an incredible stack of pancakes into a masterpiece with one of these healthy pancake toppings.

While it all starts with a great pancake recipe, my family and I go to town with the toppings so no two weekend breakfasts feel the same.

Healthy Toppings for Pancakes

Topping our pancakes with a variety of healthy toppings is one of my favorite ways to change things up at breakfast. Even if you’re eating paleo pancakes, you’ll find sweet and savory ideas in this list!

  • Greek Yogurt: a dollop of this creamy topping creates incredible texture and protein. Or, add it into the batter and make Greek yogurt pancakes.
  • Roasted Strawberries: roasting your not-so-ripe strawberries is one way to make them sweet and a terrific topping.
  • Berries: raspberries or black berries are always a favorite fresh. Or, turn frozen berries into blueberry syrup or strawberry syrup made with a little honey.
  • Honey or Maple syrup: both natural and less refined than store-bought syrups.
  • Nuts: almond slivers, walnuts, and pecans will give your stack some crunch.
  • Jam: if homemade jam is your thing, it’s time to use it! Or, try this quick chia jam recipe.
  • Granola: sprinkle your favorite mix or this grain-free vanilla nut granola for a crunchy texture with a sweet, nutty flavor.
  • Cinnamon: dusted on top, turned into cinnamon syrup, or add the cinnamon to the pancake batter for an epic stack.
  • Raisin paste: it’s naturally sweet and easy to make using raisins instead of dates.
  • Banana slices: on top or in the batter with cinnamon to create banana bread pancakes.
  • Cinnamon Peanut Butter: any nut butter is great but cinnamon… it’s next level.
  • Roasted Apples: baked to bring out their sweetness and dusted with cinnamon for flavor.
  • Cinnamon Apples: made quickly in the pan for a healthy sweet treat to use on top or in the pancake batter.
  • Unsweetened Applesauce: tangy, golden-brown, and thick texture.
  • Dark Chocolate: full of delicious antioxidants. Grate some on top for a little dust of goodness.
  • Orange Zest: now you can enjoy orange pancakes without the dreaded pulp!
  • Peaches: freshly sliced or even canned, which you can turn into peach syrup, make your pancakes taste like summer.
  • Honeydew Melon: when in season and sliced very thin. Bonus, add prosciutto.
  • Dried fruit: from cherries, cranberries, raisins, dried mangoes, and more these bite-sized fruits add a little sweetness naturally.
  • Pineapple chunks: dice up this fresh fruit and enjoy some pineapple pancakes.
  • Seeds: sunflower, hemp, or pumpkin seeds, especially lightly toasted in a pan.
  • Kiwi: sliced thin they add a delicious flavor that packs nutrition.
  • Coconut Flakes: there’s nothing boring about those unsweetened coconut flakes! They go great in pancakes.
  • Cranberry Sauce: especially if it’s homemade and you have it on hand… use it.
  • Pumpkin: a dollop of canned pumpkin and a little cinnamon will turn your plain pancakes into healthy pumpkin pancakes.
  • Matcha powder: a little dusting on top or in the batter to make matcha pancakes.
  • Protein Powder: mix a tablespoon with some yogurt and you’ve got a thick, protein-rich topping that’s healthy!
  • Flax meal: ground flax seeds are very nutritious and can easily be sprinkled on top since they have a mild and nutty flavor.
  • Pumpkin spice: a little dusted on top or in the batter like in these pumpkin spice pancakes.
  • Ginger: grate a little on top or in the batter along with some cinnamon to create gingerbread pancakes!
  • Nutmeg: another earthy holiday spice that makes breakfast taste epic!

Healthy Savory Pancake Toppings

Going in a more savory direction? I’ve got you covered with these savory topping ideas for your healthy pancakes!

  • Sauteed Mushrooms: a delicious savory option that turns savory pancakes into a delicious meal.
  • Sausage: leftovers from the night before? Put your smoked sausage right on top!
  • Cheeses: a little sprinkle can transform thin pancakes into the world’s easiest crepes!
  • Smoked Salmon: adds protein and turns your stack into a gourmet meal.
  • Whipped Cottage Cheese: put a cup of this protein-rich ingredient in your blender and whip it until it’s frothy.
  • Shredded Carrots: sweet, crunchy, and easy to sneak into the batter making carrot cake pancakes or on top!
  • Shredded Zucchini: sauteed a little as a topping or add it to the batter and make zucchini pancakes.
  • Bell Peppers: these roasted veggies for the ultimate savory meal!
  • Mint Leaves: refreshing, airy, and of course, minty!
  • Fried Egg: topping pancakes with runny eggs enhances texture and flavor.
  • Turkey Bacon: cooked crispy and chopped into bacon bits.
  • Sauteed Kale: warm up those leftovers and top your pancakes with it.
  • Avocado: thinly sliced and with a fried egg. Don’t knock it till you try it.
  • Chopped Spinach: chop it real fine or add it to the batter like in these spinach pancakes.
  • Hummus: another favorite to spread over thinner pancakes or try this chocolate hummus!

The sky is the limit when it comes to topping your pancakes! If unrefined ingredients are your thing, check out my latest cookbook!
