It’s time to pull out the waffle iron and whip up a batch of these incredible waffles, which will not let you down!

Finding a tasty, gluten AND dairy-free waffle recipe used to be a headache. Everything tasted blah and had the texture of rubber- definitely not a winner for my family.
I’ve tried gluten-free waffle mixes and while some have been delicious, they aren’t cheap or easy to find. Out of convenience, I’ve also purchased frozen gluten-free waffles, which can be delicious and also expensive.
Homemade Dairy-Free Gluten-Free Waffles
If you’re been let down by other recipes for homemade waffles without dairy or gluten, you’re about to try an easy recipe that yields delicious waffles with soft centers and crispy edges.
After many inedible attempts from testing my own gluten-free breakfast recipes and what looked good on Pinterest, I decided to go back to basics and use my classic waffle recipe as the base and tweak it to my son’s allergy needs.
The results? Delicious waffles that are gluten-free and dairy-free that yield consistent results.

Ingredients
You’ll find the ingredient amounts to this gluten-free and dairy-free waffle recipe below. But in case you need to make additional swaps, check out this list with tips:
- Gluten-free flour mix: I use this mix or this one, which is perfected for baking and already includes xantham gum.
- Baking soda: gives waffles their airy and slightly fluffy middles.
- Baking powder: a little to give these extra lift.
- Salt: enhances the flavors of the other ingredients.
- Sugar: sweetens the batter and gives these waffles nice golden exteriors.
- Eggs: to bind the other ingredients. Read the section below if you need to make this recipe eggless.
- Oil: use vegetable oil, coconut oil, or ghee. This adds moisture to the batter.
- Vanilla: this is optional but adds a nice touch of flavor to the waffle batter.
- Dairy-free milk: I use unsweetened vanilla almond milk and sometimes oat milk. If you want to use canned coconut milk, I recommend diluting it 50/50 with water so the batter isn’t too thick.
Making These Waffles Egg-Free
I typically recommend using an egg substitute for recipes that contain 2 or fewer eggs. This recipe has 3 eggs so I recommend you use this egg-free waffle recipe, which works great with gluten-free 1:1 baking flour mixes and a dairy-free milk substitute.
How to Make GF DF Waffles
Here are some additional tips beyond the steps in the recipe card that are helpful to make these waffles gluten and dairy-free:
- Make the waffle batter
One important note in this step is to gradually add the wet mixture to the dry mixture and stop mixing once there are no visible lumps. - Let the batter sit for 5 minutes
Gluten-free flour tends to thicken up as it sits so if you make your waffles immediately, the first waffle will be different than the last. This is the perfect time to preheat the waffle iron. - Cook the waffles
Always start with a hot waffle iron before you pour the batter. Some waffle irons don’t need greasing, and some do. Heat it first, then once hot, grease it and immediately pour the batter. - Serve
These waffles pair great with your favorite toppings and syrups.

How to Get the Perfect Gluten-Free Dairy-Free Waffles
This waffle recipe yields the type of golden, crisp waffles you expect from the original recipe. Some tips to ensure success:
Let the batter rest for 5 minutes:
Gluten-free flour mixes can vary and some yield thicker batters than others. Wait for the flour to absorb the liquid in the bowl and then add a tablespoon or two of water if necessary to adjust the consistency.
Prep the waffle iron
Not preheating the waffle iron will yield chewy and gummy waffles. And, if yours isn’t non-stick, I recommend greasing it with oil or spray.
Keep them warm
Just like keeping pancakes warm, you can keep these waffles warm in the oven or wrapped in a towel.
Store or Freeze Extra Waffles
Leftover waffles can be refrigerated for up to 5 days and frozen in a freezer bag for up to 2 months. When you want to enjoy them again, reheat them in the toaster (if they fit) or in the microwave for 30 seconds.
Gluten-Free Waffle Toppings
The good news is that most incredible toppings for waffles are naturally gluten-free! I love topping these with fresh berries, roasted strawberries, roasted apples or a cinnamon apple topping, nut butter, or Nutella, and syrups like strawberry syrup, blueberry syrup, or cinnamon syrup.
