Overnight Oatmeal with Chia Seeds

I'm always looking for simple ways to increase nutrition in our everyday meals, and it doesn't get any better or easier than adding chia seeds to the overnight oats!

Instead of soaking the seeds in water, you add them to the jar with milk and oats, and they absorb the liquid overnight. The consistency is thick and creamy, and the neutral flavor pairs great with any toppings you want to add to make it taste like an indulgent chia pudding!

Why You Should Add Chia Seeds to Overnight Oats

Chia seeds may be tiny, but they contain a wealth of nutrients! They are rich in fiber, protein, antioxidants, vitamins, and healthy fats. When you combine the nutrition of chia seeds with the health benefits of oats, you get a terrific meal that keeps your belly full for hours.

What is the Ratio of Chia Seeds to Overnight Oats

Using the right amount of oats, milk, and chia seeds guarantees the best oatmeal texture. The ratio is ½ cup of old-fashioned oats to ¾ cup of milk to 1 tablespoon of chia seeds.

How to Make Chia Seed Overnight Oats

  1. Combine oats, milk, chia seeds, and honey (if using) in each jar and stir to combine.
  2. Refrigerate the jars for at least 4 hours or overnight.
  3. Serve the overnight oats cold or microwave them for a few seconds. Add oatmeal toppings and bon appétit!

Variations and Mix-Ins

This overnight oats recipe is a great base to customize this breakfast to your liking! Here are some delicious ideas:

  • Add your favorite fruit like strawberries, sliced banana, mango, or peach.
  • Increase protein by adding cottage cheese or Greek yogurt.
  • Increase fiber by adding flax seeds to make high-fiber overnight oats.
  • Make it tastier by including chocolate and peanut butter. You can also make pumpkin pie overnight oats or mocha overnight oatmeal!
  • Run out of milk? Make overnight oats with water and problem solved!

How Long Do They Last in the Fridge

Overnight oats with chia seeds can be stored in the fridge up to 5 days. That said, I prefer to eat them within 2 days. Longer than that, the texture can become thicker and slightly gummy, so you may need to add a splash of milk to thin it out.

I bought some chia seeds at the store but was stuck on ratio to overnight oats. This turned out perfectly, my new breakfast for weekdays for sure!
