With the tips in this post, you’ll learn how to make waffles with pancake mix to make your weekend breakfast epic!

Can You Use Pancake Mix to Make Waffles
Yes! In fact, using pancake mix to make waffles is a very convenient way to enjoy an incredible weekend breakfast. I do this all the time when I travel with my family and stay at an Airbnb, so I don’t have to buy the other dry ingredients.
This recipe also works if you make your own homemade waffle mix too! And if waffles are your thing, make sure to try these chocolate chip waffles or my bacon cheddar waffles.
Waffle Mix vs Pancake Mix
Pancake mix can be complete (just add water) or not (needs milk or water and eggs). Waffle mix will always require an egg and oil in the batter, as well as milk or water to make the batter. That said, most boxed mixes can be used to make both waffles and pancakes by ensuring you add the right amount of ingredients.
Ingredients
The amounts of the ingredients to make waffles with pancake mix are below; but before you make any swaps, here are some ingredient details:
- Pancake mix: complete boxed mix already has the flour, baking powder, powdered milk, salt -essentially all the dry ingredients you’d need.
- Water: complete mixes already have powdered milk so water is recommended. Only swap for milk if your pancake mix is not complete.
- Egg: waffle batter requires eggs for structure, moisture, and they help make them feel and taste homemade -even when using a mix.
- Oil or Butter: gives waffles their crisp golden edges and keeps them from sticking.

How to Make Waffles with Pancake Mix
Some tips to make waffles with pancake mix turn out great in each of the steps include:
- Make the batter
Measure the pancake mix in a large bowl, then add the other ingredients. Use a fork to break up the egg first to avoid overmixing, and then mix the rest until there are no visible clumps. - Heat the waffle iron
Personally, I mix the batter first and then heat the waffle iron. When it beeps, I want to be ready to pour the batter asap. If you preheat it first, it might get too hot. This varies by type of waffle iron. - Cook the waffles
If your waffle iron requires greasing, do it right before pouring the batter. Pour enough batter to let the waffles expand while cooking. When they stop steaming, and they’re golden, remove them from the waffle iron. - Serve
Serve warm topped with syrup and your favorite waffle toppings.

Greasing the Waffle Maker
Many waffle irons do not require greasing because they have a non-stick coating. If yours does, wait to grease it with oil or butter once it’s hot, right before you pour the batter.

Best Waffle Toppings
Waffles are like hashtags; their possibilities are endless! This means that you can load them up with yogurt, fresh berries, sliced bananas, or cinnamon apples, or keep it simple with delicious syrups like blueberry syrup, strawberry syrup, or cinnamon syrup!
Waffles Made with Pancake Mix

Watch how it’s made:
Ingredients
- 2 cups complete pancake mix
- 1 ¼ cups water
- 1 egg
- 3 tablespoons melted butter or oil
Instructions
Make the batter:
- Measure the pancake mix, without packing it tightly, and add it to a large bowl.
- Make a well in the middle and pour the water, egg, and melted butter or oil. Use a fork to break up the egg first, and then mix with a whisk or fork until the batter is smooth.
Make the waffles:
- Preheat the waffle iron. Once hot, grease, spray, or melt butter on the hot surface. Some waffle irons do not require greasing, so make sure to check yours.
- Immediately, pour the waffle batter while leaving room for it to expand as it cooks. This ensures it doesn’t overflow. Close the lid of the waffle iron until steaming stops and the waffles are golden brown. Some waffle irons have a beeping sound.
- Remove the cooked waffles onto a plate or keep them warm while you repeat the process with the remaining waffle batter.
Serve:
- Serve warm topped with your favorite waffle toppings.
