Traditional Fajita Toppings

Whether you make shrimp fajitas, steak, or chicken fajitas, one of these traditional toppings will fill your tortilla -and your belly- in no time. Try adding:

  • Peppers & onions: usually cooked on the side, they add filling to this meal.
  • Shredded Lettuce: fresh or bagged equally complements fajitas!
  • Cherry Tomatoes: liven up fajitas with fresh or this roasted recipe that requires no chopping!
  • Avocado: creamy and indulgent-a perfect balance.
  • Lime: sliced on the side for a squeeze of citrus.
  • Pico de Gallo: this classic topping is sure to add flavor and variety!
  • Cilantro: deep and refreshing flavor that will soothe your tastebuds!
  • Pickled Jalapeño: tangy heat = an epic fajita night!
  • Mushrooms: nutritious and filling and oh.so.delicious. Try these portobello tacos if that’s your jam.
  • Fried Potatoes: creates a crispy topping that puts a spin on regular "meat and potatoes."
  • Shredded cheese: Cheddar, Mexican cheese blend, Colby Jack are great options.
  • Queso: drizzle some queso dip, whether it’s velveeta or my homemade cheese dip on top or inside the tortilla.
  • Sour Cream: everyone has at least one pack in the back of their fridge, so why not use it!?
  • Salsa: try my salsa recipe for an addition that is crave-worthy!
  • Guacamole: this easy homemade guac recipe is quick or up the heat with this spicy guacamole recipe.
  • Pineapple Salsa: the sweetness of this salsa pairs beautifully with savory or spicy fajitas.
  • Roasted Salsa Verde: fast, simple, and better than any store-bought.
  • Avocado Salsa: so fresh, delish, you’ll want to double up the recipe.
  • Corn & Black Bean Salsa: simple, fresh, and perfectly flavorful.
  • Avocado Lime Ranch: extra tangy version of your favorite dressing, keeping fajitas juicy and indulgent.
  • Sriracha: a drizzle over the top and take the heat to the next leve.
  • Beans: such as refried, black or pinto, are a nutritious fajita filling, or can be served on the side.
  • Rice: filling, budget-friendly, and easy to prep. Bonus points: make this Cilantro Lime Rice recipe.
  • Cauliflower Rice: a lower-carb option great for fajitas like this Mexican, Spanish, or Cilantro Lime Rice recipe.
  • Tortillas: add crispy strips for garnish or tortilla chips on the side to scoop up your dips.
  • Seasonings: turn up the heat with a sprinkle of dried peppers, taco seasoning, or your fave.

Unique Fajita Toppings

Some fajita toppings you might not have thought about and are more unique include:

  • Cucumber salsa: bite-size flavor with a whole lotta crunch and fresh.
  • Tzatziki: refreshing, tangy, and garlicky.
  • Ranch: mix the ingredients in a jar, shake, and you’re ready to drizzle.
  • Cowboy Caviar: a trendy Tiktok dish that builds flavor in the fridge and loaded with delicious veggies.
  • Eggs: scrambled or fried, eggs make the most delicious breakfast fajitas!
  • Bacon: the bacon itself isn’t unique, but the combination of crispy bacon and soft veggies is!
  • Roasted Sweet Potato Cubes: Sub the potatoes for sweet potatoes (less carbs and the sweetness is unmatched).
  • Zucchini: grilled or roasted zucchini is a yummy topper or try these Zucchini Tacos!
  • Pickled Garlic: will it fajita? Yes it will!

Let me know in the comments what your favorite topping is! See you next time.
